Dimapur, September 7: Dimapur generates around 75,000 to 80,000 kg of waste every day, highlighting the growing waste management challenge in the district, a resource person said during a workshop-cum-sensitisation programme organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) in collaboration with the Dimapur Press Club on Monday.
The resource person said a segregation exercise of around 4,000 kg of commercial waste in Dimapur found that 72% was organic waste. At the Hornbill Festival 2023, around 22,479 kg of waste was generated, of which 43% was organic.The resource person also raised concern over the discovery of blood-stained syringes in the general waste, warning that improper disposal of such biomedical waste could pose risks to sanitation workers and the public.
Meanwhile, the NPCB said Nagaland has so far not registered any producers, recyclers or refurbishers of plastic bottles under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. Stakeholders involved in plastic bottle manufacturing and waste management have been notified to register under the EPR system.The resource person cautioned that failure to comply with the prescribed rules could result in the NPCB issuing closure notices and imposing penalties.
The programme was held as part of the observance of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies 2026, under the theme “Clean Air, Healthy Choices: Acting Together for People and Planet.”
