Dimapur, October 15: Prodigals’ Home, in collaboration with Tikvah Training Centre and Sign Reach Bilingual Ministry, organised a Disability Awareness and Sensitisation Programme commemorating White Cane Safety Day at the Conference Hall, Traffic Control Office, Dimapur, on Wednesday, under the theme “Small Actions, Big Inclusion.”
Speaking at the programme, Ms. K. Ela, Director of Prodigals’ Home, said it was the first time White Cane Safety Day was being observed in Nagaland and Dimapur. Highlighting the challenges faced by people with visual impairments, including potholes and the lack of proper pathways, she stressed the importance of good roads and appealed to the government and traffic authorities to issue advisories to ensure safer movement for persons with visual disabilities.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mhasivino Khale, Special Educator at Sign Reach Bilingual Ministry, said the white cane serves as the eyes of a visually impaired person, providing safety, identity, dignity and confidence. She urged the public to respect personal space, provide clear directions and always ask before offering assistance, rather than assuming that help is needed.
