The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), along with the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) and Chakhkesang Students’ Union (CSU), has opposed the compulsory singing or playing of the revised Vande Mataram during Independence Day programmes and in educational institutions.
In separate notifications dated August 12, the student bodies directed their affiliated and subordinate units to ensure that no student is compelled to participate in Vande Mataram against their religious beliefs or conscience. The organisations clarified that they have no objection to Independence Day celebrations, the National Flag, National Anthem or other national symbols.
The student bodies cited freedom of conscience and religion, maintaining that students should not face disciplinary action, discrimination or intimidation for declining participation. The NSF stated that it will pursue the matter through peaceful and democratic means while safeguarding the rights, beliefs and conscience of students.
The ASU also appealed to the Naga public to abstain from attending the said event, while the CSU reaffirmed that its directive will remain in force until the order mandating compulsory singing or playing of Vande Mataram is revoked or withdrawn.
