Khonoma, August 8, 2026: Khonoma Village officially launched its Community-Based Sustainable Waste Management System (KCSWMS) under the Forest and Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project (FBMP), marking a significant step towards sustainable environmental management.The initiative aims to establish an efficient, community-driven system for waste segregation, collection, processing and responsible disposal, while encouraging behavioural change and greater public participation.
The launch programme brought together government officials, project representatives, community leaders, youth organisations, students and village residents. The initiative was jointly implemented by the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (DEFCC), Government of Nagaland, and NEPED, with support under the FBMP.
The project, co-financed by the Federal Government of Germany through KfW, covers 64 villages across four districts—Peren, Kohima, Wokha and Mokokchung, promoting biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods and climate-resilient development.
