Kohima, July 30: The Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) has submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, seeking immediate intervention over the worsening condition of National Highway-29 at Kisama following recurring mudslides and road subsidence.
In the memorandum, SAPO stated that the affected stretch has once again suffered severe damage at the same vulnerable location, disrupting vehicular movement and posing serious risks to commuters. The organisation said the deteriorating condition of the highway has become a major public safety concern.
SAPO urged the Deputy Commissioner to direct the concerned authorities to conduct an immediate on-site inspection and undertake urgent restoration work on the damaged section. It also appealed for necessary instructions to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out both short-term repairs and long-term mitigation measures to prevent further damage.
The organisation further requested the administration to expedite the repair and operationalisation of the alternative route to Kisama so that it can be opened for commuter traffic while restoration work continues on NH-29.
To ease congestion and reduce risks, SAPO also called for strict regulation of traffic on the affected stretch, with priority management of heavy vehicles during peak hours to ensure safer movement for students, office-goers and the general public.
Additionally, SAPO urged the district administration to coordinate closely with the Phesama Village Council for ground-level assessment, community mobilisation and effective implementation of remedial measures, stating that the council’s local knowledge would be crucial for ensuring sustainable solutions.
Reaffirming its commitment to the issue, SAPO assured the district administration that it, along with all stakeholders, would extend full cooperation in addressing the situation. The organisation stressed that NH-29 serves as a vital transportation lifeline and called for prompt action to safeguard public safety and restore normal movement.
