Kohima, July 30: Secretary & AHoD of the Social Welfare Department, Government of Nagaland, Limawabang Jamir, IAS, has said that the department is strengthening rescue, rehabilitation and awareness measures to tackle the growing threat of human trafficking in the state.
In an exclusive interaction, Jamir said the department is ensuring immediate support and long-term rehabilitation for survivors through the Child Helpline, Women Helpline-181 and Sakhi One Stop Centres, which provide shelter, counselling, legal aid and rehabilitation services.
He noted that Nagaland remains vulnerable as a source, transit and destination for human trafficking, with traffickers increasingly using false promises of jobs, education and marriage to lure victims. He stressed that awareness, community vigilance and close coordination between the Social Welfare Department, police, district administration, NGOs and local communities are key to preventing trafficking and securing convictions.
Jamir said awareness programmes are being conducted across schools, villages and communities to educate people on trafficking, online exploitation and illegal child adoption. He also acknowledged challenges such as difficult terrain, remote areas and evolving trafficking methods but said the government is strengthening institutional coordination and capacity-building.
Appealing to the public, he urged parents, community leaders and youth to stay alert against suspicious job offers, marriage proposals and illegal adoption practices, and to report suspected trafficking cases through the available helplines. He emphasised that combating human trafficking requires collective action from both the government and society.
