POLICE DIG DEEPER INTO CODEINE NETWORK; INTERSTATE LINKS THROUGH DIGITAL TRAILS

KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 17: Nearly 20,000 Codeine Bottles Seized in Dimapur; Three ArrestedNagaland Police have arrested three people following the seizure of nearly 20,000 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup from a warehouse in Dimapur.

Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma said police have busted the warehouse where the stock was being stored and arrested the manager or storekeeper.However, the alleged owner of the consignment and persons who may have been licensed to procure or stock the medicine are yet to be arrested.

The DGP said police are examining call records, financial transactions and statements of the arrested persons to trace the suppliers and identify possible interstate links.Police are also investigating whether licensed pharmaceutical dealers or insiders may have diverted codeine supplies into the illegal market.Sharma said Nagaland Police is working with the Health Department and Drugs & Pharmaceutical authorities to develop a digital tracking mechanism to monitor the movement of pharmaceutical drugs.He said the investigation will focus on the suppliers, financiers and the wider network, rather than limiting action to those at the end of the supply chain.
