GIS CENTRE TO BOOST DRONE SKILLS, 3D PRINTING & INDIGENOUS TECHNOLOGY IN NAGALAND

Kohima, September 7: Governor of Nagaland has appreciated the efforts of the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre in promoting skill development in emerging technologies and preparing the state’s youth for future employment opportunities.

During his visit to the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre in Kohima, the Governor highlighted the growing importance of drone technology and its applications across sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, disaster management, environmental monitoring, cinematography and geospatial mapping.

Expressing appreciation for the initiatives undertaken by the Centre, the Governor said he was “truly fascinated” by its functioning and activities. He encouraged the Centre to continue strengthening its capabilities and assured his support towards further development of its activities.

The Governor also stressed the importance of adopting modern technology and innovation for effective governance and development. He encouraged the Centre to contribute towards the vision of a self-reliant India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.Following the programme, Y. Kikheto Sema, Principal Secretary and Development Commissioner, along with Atho Kesiezie, UAV Engineer and Coordinator, Drone Centre of Excellence, and Mhathung Kithan, Senior Project Director, Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre, briefed the media on the Centre’s projects and initiatives.

They informed that interested individuals can register and apply for various programmes through the Nagaland GIS portal, with an online application facility also available. They also highlighted the fee structure for the training programmes.The Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre, which was established in 2014, is now expanding its focus towards advanced technologies, including 3D printing. Officials said the Centre aims to eventually manufacture its own drone components and equipment.

At present, various components and materials are procured from different countries, while drones are designed and customised according to specific requirements and applications. The Centre is working towards developing indigenous capabilities so that locally designed and manufactured drones can meet the needs of Nagaland in the future.The officials further informed that drone training programmes commenced in January, with students undergoing structured training programmes of seven and 14 days, depending on the course and level of training.

The initiative is expected to provide students and youth with practical exposure to drone technology and create new opportunities in emerging fields while strengthening Nagaland’s capacity in geospatial technology, innovation and digital development.
