

Dimapur, August 21: Veteran Naga peace advocate and reconciliationist Niketu Iralu was laid to rest at Kerünyü Ki, Sechü Zubza, on Thursday, following a funeral service attended by family, church leaders, civil society representatives and well-wishers.Iralu, who passed away in New Delhi on August 18 at the age of 91, was remembered for his lifelong commitment to peace, non-violence, reconciliation and social service.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, in his eulogy, described Iralu as “one of Naga’s finest minds” and a bridge-builder who consistently chose dialogue over confrontation. He also highlighted Iralu’s work in addressing drug and alcohol addiction and his contribution to Naga reconciliation efforts.
Iralu served as Chairman of the Naga National Reconciliation Commission and was later associated with the Forum for Naga Reconciliation. He received several recognitions, including the Rotary Peace Award in 2018 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Initiatives of Change International in 2025.
The funeral concluded with the laying of wreaths and prayers, as Nagaland bid farewell to a respected advocate for peace and reconciliation.
