The union alleged that despite assurances given by the Department of Power on June 23, the smart meters had not been replaced as committed. The department had reportedly assured that all smart meters installed under the domestic category without the knowledge or consent of consumers would be replaced with the old static meters.The department had further assured that the installation of smart meters in Mon town would remain suspended, and that the process would resume only after adequate public awareness programmes and consultations with stakeholders, ward authorities and consumers had been conducted.

However, the Konyak Union Mon Unit alleged that these assurances had not been honoured, prompting it to seal the Executive Engineer’s office. The development highlights the ongoing disagreement over the implementation of smart meters in Mon town and the demand for greater public consultation and adherence to the assurances made by the department.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the Director General of Police, the State Crime Police Station (SCPS), Nagaland, registered the FIR following a written complaint alleging that the money was demanded without any written notice, receipt, challan or other lawful document to justify the demand.

Police stated that a preliminary enquiry was conducted by Dimapur Police, during which statements were recorded and an audio recording was recovered. Based on the findings, a case was subsequently registered at the State Crime Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The police have sought further investigation, including forensic examination of the audio recording, to establish the facts. The allegations remain under investigation.The development comes amid earlier controversy surrounding Hesuh’s detention in connection with wildlife-related social media posts. In September, the People’s Youth Organisation (PYO) had raised concerns over his detention and alleged demand for INR 1 lakh for his release, calling for an impartial inquiry.

During the programme, a resolution was adopted calling for collective responsibility, institutional accountability and sustained action to address gender-based violence, stressing that condemnation alone is insufficient without concrete measures to protect survivors and ensure justice.The resolution called on community leaders, tribal bodies, non-governmental organisations and joint working forums to strengthen community responses by establishing support systems for survivors, including accessible information, welfare assistance, shelters and rehabilitation services.

It also proposed the establishment of trauma care and long-term rehabilitation centres to help survivors recover and reintegrate into society, with similar facilities to be considered across all districts.The resolution further urged concerned government bodies, legal institutions and associations to review and amend their existing guidelines and policies to strengthen accountability and address gender-based violence. Emphasising a zero-tolerance approach, it called on tribal bodies and community leaders to formally reject compromises or settlements in cases of gender-based violence, including those arising from customary practices.

It also stressed that communities must function as support systems for survivors rather than subjecting them to discrimination or pressure to settle cases. The resolution underscored that victims must not be forced into compromises and must be able to seek justice with dignity and without coercion.

In a press statement dated October 14, the JCF said residents in various localities continue to face irregular garbage collection despite regularly paying the enhanced Residential Sanitary Fee (RSF).The Forum stated that the situation has led to the accumulation of waste, causing inconvenience to households and posing risks to public health and hygiene.

It emphasized that sanitation is a fundamental civic service that must be delivered with regularity, transparency and accountability.The JCF appealed to the DMC to ensure timely and scheduled waste collection across all wards, strengthen on-ground monitoring to prevent service gaps, and maintain clear communication with residents regarding collection schedules and corrective measures.

While acknowledging the challenges of managing civic services in a growing city, the Forum expressed its willingness to extend cooperation at the community level.The JCF also expressed confidence that the DMC would treat the matter with urgency and take immediate steps to ensure efficient and reliable sanitation services.The Joint Council Forum comprises Middle Point Council, Churches Colony Council, NST Colony Council, Nyamo Lotha Colony Council and Khermahal Area Council.

In a press statement dated October 15, the federation urged the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to ensure regular and reliable waste collection, while calling on colony councils to monitor sanitation services in their respective areas and report shortcomings to the concerned authorities.

According to the DUCCF, the issue of sanitation services has been raised repeatedly with the DMC. Following discussions involving the DMC, DUCCF and Gaon Buras (GBs), a general meeting was held at the Lions Club, where the matter was deliberated upon.The federation stated that an annual fee of INR 80 per household was agreed upon in 2024, with the expectation of improved sanitation services.

However, collection services reportedly remained inconsistent. Following subsequent meeting involving DUCCF and its executive members, the fee was agreed to be increased to Rs. 100, with residents expecting regular and effective garbage collection.Expressing concern that the increase in fees has not been matched by dependable services in many colonies, DUCCF stressed that sanitation is essential to public health, cleanliness and the dignity of residents.

The federation called on the DMC to establish a clear garbage collection schedule and promptly inform affected colony councils of any disruptions.DUCCF also urged all colony councils to remain vigilant, monitor waste collection in their respective areas and bring continuing service gaps to the attention of the authorities.

Maintaining that residents should not be expected to pay the Residential Sanitation Fee where the service is not being provided, the federation urged the DMC to first ensure reliable garbage collection across colonies and work with colony councils to address the existing shortcomings.
