NAGA YOUTH MOVEMENT DENIED MEETING WITH GOVERNOR; SUBMITS FRESH REPRESENTATION

Kohima, October 13: The Naga Youth Movement (NYM), which came to Kohima to meet the Governor of Nagaland at Lok Bhavan on Tuesday, said that despite having been given an appointment, its members were denied the meeting and were later refused a further appointment. Following this, the movement submitted another representation to the Governor, reiterating its demand for an early resolution to the long-standing Naga political issue.

The NYM has been pressing the Government of India to expedite a political solution and implement the Framework Agreement signed with the NSCN (IM) on August 3, 2015, and the Agreed Position signed with the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) on November 17, 2017.

The movement had earlier organized a public rally on June 27, 2026, at Agri Expo, 4th Mile, Chümoukedima, and submitted an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an urgent resolution to the Naga political issue. In its memorandum, the NYM called for a political solution within three months from July 5, 2026.

The movement has expressed concern over the prolonged delay in resolving the issue, citing alleged extortion, lawlessness, youth unemployment, migration, economic concerns and divisions within Naga society. It has urged the Centre to clarify the status of the two agreements and convene a round-table meeting involving Naga political groups and stakeholders to work towards a comprehensive and binding settlement.

In its latest representation, the NYM also appealed to young people and the wider Naga youth community to prepare themselves to take an active role in demanding accountability. The movement called on youths to come out of their comfort zones and raise their voices for accountability if the Governor fails to respond to their representation.

The movement’s appeal underscores its call for greater youth participation in the pursuit of a political solution and accountability from those in positions of authority. The response of the Governor and the outcome of the latest representation were not available at the time of filing this report.
