EXCLUSIVE: 70–80% of Government-Purchased Forest Land Encroached at Lokhipahar: Kikheto Sema

Kohima, November 4: Around 70–80 per cent of the over 5,000 acres of land purchased by the Government of Nagaland at Lokhipahar in Mon district has been encroached upon, Principal Secretary, Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (DEFCC), Y. Kikheto Sema, IAS, has said.

Speaking on the issue, Sema informed that the government had purchased over 5,000 acres of land, but encroachment reportedly began around 25 years ago.
He said that following discussions with the State Cabinet, the department proceeded with a field inspection to assess the situation on the ground.

During the visit, Sema observed that approximately 70–80 per cent of the purchased land had been encroached upon, with more than 300 families reportedly residing in the area and depending on the land for their livelihood.
Acknowledging the situation and the livelihood concerns of the families living there, Sema said the department would examine the matter and hold further discussions to arrive at a solution that ensures a “win-win situation” for both sides.

He clarified that no final decision has been taken so far regarding the action to be initiated against the encroachment.
The issue has raised serious concerns over the protection of government-purchased forest land, while also highlighting the challenge of balancing forest conservation with the livelihood of families settled in the area.

The department’s next course of action is expected to be closely watched as discussions continue over the future of the encroached land.
