Kohima, September 2: Nagaland MLA and Advisor Achumbemo Kikon has called for the complete withdrawal of the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, warning that it could severely affect churches and Christian charitable organisations involved in education, healthcare and social welfare.
Speaking in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Kikon raised concerns over provisions relating to FCRA registration and assets created through foreign contributions, citing the non-renewal of FCRA registrations of the Diocese of Kohima and Development Association of Nagaland. He also invoked Article 371A and urged wider consultation with churches, civil society and other stakeholders.
Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio, meanwhile, called for safeguards to ensure that genuine charitable and humanitarian activities are not affected. He said he had raised the concerns with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and welcomed the Bill’s referral to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee, expressing hope that the JPC would consider stakeholders’ concerns before making its recommendations.
