Dimapur, September 2: DMC employees, led by the DMC Employees Welfare Union, began a peaceful pen-down strike on September 2 over five months of pending salaries, with the dues now entering the sixth month, along with pending EPF payments. Union Vice President Abel Swu said the strike will continue until their demands are addressed and warned of a sanitation shutdown and full-fledged protest if the DMC councillors fail to act by September 7.
Meanwhile, a DMC councillor said the council is facing severe revenue constraints, citing over 440 employees, the loss of toll-tax revenue and inadequate income from parking tax and sanitation fees. The councillor also said much of the available revenue is being spent on maintaining poorly conditioned sanitation trucks. The councillor appealed to the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs authorities for government assistance, particularly for Dimapur, to address the financial and sanitation challenges.
