Noklak, August 24: The search for Muthong, a Class 10 student who was reportedly swept away by a flash flood in Noklak district, entered its fifth day today, with his body yet to be recovered.
The official search and rescue operation was called off after three days. However, family members, villagers and well-wishers have continued the search under the close observation of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). Every day, around 500–600 people, including residents from neighbouring villages, have been gathering to assist in the search, along with the DDMA, Village Guards, Fire & Emergency Services, NDRF, police, family members, well-wishers and members of the public.
According to sources, the area had received heavy rainfall a day before the incident. Although there was no rain when Muthong and his four friends went out, the river current remained very strong due to the heavy rainfall from the previous day. The strong current is believed to have contributed to Muthong being swept away.
According to the DDMA Noklak, Muthong was reportedly swept away by flash floods while he and four friends were out in the area. One of his friends, who was washing himself in the river at the time, reportedly witnessed Muthong being carried away by the strong current.
The official report of the incident was received by the authorities at around 6:48 PM on June 20, 2026, following which search operations were immediately launched.
A thorough search was conducted along the Leing River over three days, but Muthong could not be located. The authorities suspect that he may have been carried downstream towards the Zunki River.
As the search enters its fifth day, family members, villagers and well-wishers continue their efforts to locate Muthong, with the ongoing search being carried out under the observation of the DDMA.
