Kohima, August 10: A group of 23 construction workers in Kohima has alleged that they have been left stranded without payment after working on the construction of Fire Brigade family quarters near the New Secretariat.
According to labour in-charge Lhiwekhro Wetsah, the workers, including skilled masons and helpers, are allegedly owed ₹92,700 in pending labour wages.
He further claimed that an additional amount of around ₹2.64 lakh related to fooding and the agreed square-foot rate remains unpaid.The workers alleged that an initial payment of ₹71,000 was cleared, but subsequent wages were withheld.
They also claimed they were threatened and asked to pay ₹10,000 before leaving the site.Some of the workers, reportedly including labourers from Eastern Nagaland, said they are unable to afford transportation back home and are worried about their families who depend on their earnings for basic necessities.
The workers have appealed to the contractor, project authorities and concerned departments to intervene and ensure the release of their pending wages.The allegations could not be independently verified at the time of reporting, and a response from the contractor and site management is yet to be obtained.
