Mon, July 31: The Konyak Union has issued a press clarification rejecting allegations that the recent floods in Assam were caused by water released from a hydroelectric dam in Mon district or by alleged illegal gold mining activities in Naginimora.
The Union clarified that no hydroelectric dam or reservoir exists in Mon district, stating that the Dikhu Hydro Electric Project remains only a proposed project and has neither been constructed nor commissioned. It also said there is no evidence linking the floods to illegal gold mining in Naginimora.
According to the Union, the flooding was triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall and cloudburst-like conditions on July 19 and 20, which caused landslides, flash floods, and overflowing rivers across Mon district before affecting downstream areas.
The Union further appealed to public representatives, organisations, the media, and the public to refrain from spreading unverified information, warning that those responsible for misinformation that leads to untoward incidents may be held accountable under the law. It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and preserving the long-standing cordial relationship between the people of Nagaland and Assam.
