DIMAPUR, July 11: Social activist Vicca S. Aye has called for a thorough investigation into the alleged tide-over rice scam in Nagaland, questioning the transparency and accountability of the Department of Food & Civil Supplies.
In an exclusive interview with Nagaland News Network (NNN), Aye said his fight against corruption is longstanding and that he would continue speaking out despite facing criticism.
Referring to an RTI filed by him, Aye said the department informed him that tide-over rice was not meant for public distribution, a response he said was unacceptable. He claimed that while the government has discussed introducing General Household Cards since 2019, tide-over rice allocations have continued, with departmental records showing an allotment of around 9.29 thousand metric tonnes. He questioned where the remaining stock had gone and rejected claims that it was distributed during the Hornbill Festival.
Aye also alleged irregularities in the supplier selection process, claiming that 17 suppliers were engaged without an open tender. He questioned the lack of transparency regarding transportation and storage of the rice and urged the government to conduct a proper investigation into its distribution.
He further expressed concern over Nagaland’s opposition-less government, saying the absence of an effective opposition has weakened efforts to expose corruption. He also raised issues regarding the distribution of other essential commodities such as sugar and kerosene and urged civil society organisations and the public to hold the government accountable.
